The paintings of American artist, Susan Cornelis, begin with a leap of the heart and imagination. She paints her inner rhythms, watching for images and meanings to emerge. Preferring the liquid mediums of watercolor and liquid acrylics she likes to “surf” the wet page with pigments, then build up glazes on surfaces textured with acrylic mediums and oriental papers.

Her California art studio/gallery looks out on an apple orchard with views of vineyards and mountains. Life in the beautiful Russian River country is a daily visual feast and contemplative setting enhancing her desire to paint. “Regular practices of meditation, contemplative sketches, and figure drawing keep the creative tap open,” says Susan.

After many years of work as a counselor and social worker and then taking care of small children, Susan rediscovered her childhood love of drawing and painting. From her passion for painting and years of art study she has become an award winning artist, popular painting workshop teacher and published childrens’s book illustrator.
